Healing Science of Ayurveda

Ayurveda, originating from the Sanskrit and meaning ‘science of life and longevity’, is the world’s most ancient system of preventive health care. Developed in the country of India over 7,000 years ago, it is a natural approach to creating balance within the body and strengthening the body's healing abilities.
Ayurveda encompasses not only a healing system, but a philosophy and lifestyle as well. Considered to be the foundation of all other great medical systems throughout the world today, it is known as the “mother of all medicine”. What sets Ayurvedic medicine apart from western medicine is that it is a complete health care system, working simultaneously on the mind, body and emotions.
The ultimate goal of Ayurveda is to restore harmony to the body of the individual and to thereby eliminate all of its diseases. It uses natural treatments in order to create balance within the body and to strengthen the body’s healing abilities. We therefore say that Ayurveda not only aims to cure the sick but also helps the average individual attain a better quality of health.
It is important to realise that Ayurvedic medicine and western medicine are not competing; sometimes western medicine is appropriate, and at other times Ayurvedic medicine may be the key. However, Ayurvedic herbal medicine has been proven to be far more effective than western medicine when dealing with chronic conditions. It can be used in combination with western medicine to make a person stronger and less likely to be affected with sickness or to restore the body after being treated with long term drugs or surgery.
Differences between conventional medicine and Ayurvedic medicine:
- Ayurveda is a system of medicine that integrates not only a healing system, but also a philosophy and a way of life.
- Unlike conventional medicine, Ayurveda treats the cause, not just the symptoms.
- Ayurvedic medicines don’t have any of the side effects commonly experienced due to Western medicines.
- As you may already know, a single course of antibiotic treatment may also kill the body’s own tissues and weaken their function. Therefore, conventional medicines always produce toxins and harmful side effects while trying to “cure” the disease.
- Ayurvedic medicine on the other hand, not only treats the cause of the sickness but also nourishes and rejuvenates the body’s tissues.
